Congress lacks clarity on invite to Trinamul Congress to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

When asked whether they would invite Trinamul officials to Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which is scheduled to arrive in the area on January 25, Congress leaders in north Bengal continue to duck queries.

Inviting people to join the yatra, the Congress started a campaign on Sunday in the districts of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and North Dinajpur. But the party avoided talking about Trinamul, which is part of the INDIA bloc along with the Congress.

"AICC is investigating the matter. We invite everyone who supports the goals and actions of the Congress—regardless of background—to join the yatra. The president of the Jalpaiguri district Congress, Pinaki Sengupta, said that they might belong to any political party.

Rahul is scheduled to attend a road event in Dhupguri on January 28. In Jalpaiguri town, he will also take a stroll before departing for Siliguri in the afternoon.

The Congress has not made it clear whether Trinamul would be invited to the yatra since it was announced. Leaders in the Trinamul camp have insisted that they have not been invited. Additionally, some of Mamata Banerjee's party's leaders have said that they would not participate in the yatra unless an agreement has been made between the parties about the distribution of seats in Bengal.

Malda South and Berhampore, two Lok Sabha seats that Trinamul's party won in Bengal in 2019, are up for grabs for the Congress. However, the Congress want more seats in regions like Purulia, Raiganj, and Darjeeling.

According to a senior Congress official in Siliguri, most Congress officials and workers oppose Trinamul's participation in the yatra because of the militant group's stern stance against them in Bengal.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave her party leaders in Murshidabad instructions to step up political activity even a few days before to the Lok Sabha elections. This demonstrates unequivocally that they are unwilling to give in or make room for us. For this reason, many of our party's leaders and employees oppose Trinamul becoming a part of the yatra. Through the event, we also want to evaluate our organizational strength and base of support, particularly in north Bengal," the leader said.

The Congress also made public Rahul Gandhi's comprehensive schedule for north Bengal on Sunday. They verified that the yatra would take a break on January 26 and 27, but they also said that it will restart on January 28 from Falakata in the Alipurduar district.

The yatra will enter Bihar via Kishanganj on January 29. On January 31, it would return to Bengal (in the Malda district) from Bihar, a Congress leader said.
