Daughter's Courageous Witnessing Leads to Father's Conviction for Mother's Murder

Five years after her father killed her, the mother finally received justice in 2018 thanks to a nine-year-old girl's statement against him.

Mason Prema Lepchan was found guilty on Tuesday by a local court in Alipurduar of hacking his wife Tasha Maya Ghisingh to death in 2018. Prema Lepchan was given a life sentence. The young child served as the eyewitness.

According to sources, Tashi Maya was doing laundry in their Barohudabusty home, which is under the district's Birpara police station, on May 31, 2018.

Abruptly, Prema repeatedly attacked her in front of their daughter with a sharp weapon. The woman passed away instantly. Then Prema ran away.

Neighbors heard the child's cries and hurried to the house to alert the police.

The father of the murdered woman, Kaila Ghisingh, reported the crime to the authorities.

That June 2, Prema was taken into custody. He has been in judicial custody ever since.

The young child described the incident and accused her father, bearing witness to the crime. She and eleven other witnesses testified against her father in court as well. The public prosecutor of the Alipurduar district court, Suhrid Majumder, stated that her remarks "strongened the merit of the case."

Prema was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday by Papiya Das, the additional district and sessions judge of Alipurduar, where the trial was underway.

The court also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 20,000, failing which he would be imprisoned for an additional six months.

The now 14-year-old girl has led by example. Public prosecutor Majumder continued, "She spoke the truth, even though she was aware of the consequences of her statement."
