The animation firm said on Thursday that Moana 2, the follow-up to Disney's Oscar-nominated picture Moana, would open in theaters on November 27. The announcement was accompanied with a first-look teaser and a still from the movie.

Disney Animation posted a teaser for "#Moana2, only in theaters Nov. 27, 2024" on X, hinting to Moana's exploration of new lands and oceans. It does not, however, provide a peek of Dwayne Johnson's portrayal of the demigod Maui.

Fans will go on a new journey with Moana, Maui, and a bunch of peculiar sailors in Dave Derrick Jr.'s Moana 2. Moana sets off on an adventure "unlike anything she's ever faced" to the perilous seas of Oceania after receiving a summons from her ancestors.

Disney released a first-look image featuring Maui. He and several supporting cast members may be seen in the photo standing on Moana's boat, watching a whale swim past.

Disney CEO Bob Iger stated, "Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise," in a statement. "And when Moana 2 hits theaters in November, we can't wait to give you even more Moana and Maui."

Three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa'i, and Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear are the composers of the film's music.

With over USD 680 million in global sales, Moana was a box office success when movie was released in 2016. During his recent interview on the CNBC channel, Iger released a statement saying, "The original Moana film from 2016 recently crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney Plus and was the most streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the US."

The actress who played Moana in the first movie, Auli'i Cravalho, is returning to the character in the follow-up.

The 2016 movie tells the story of Moana, a courageous adolescent girl from Polynesia who sets out to sail across the ocean to save her island from a curse. Along the journey, she befriends Maui, overcomes challenges, and discovers her true identity as a seafarer. Moana makes the decision to heal Te Fiti's heart—a goddess with the ability to generate life—in order to restore peace to her people and the ocean.
