Election Commission proposes bypoll schedule for Maniktala Assembly seat in Bengal

The Supreme Court received a report from the Election Commission on Monday on the suggested date of the Bengali bypoll for the Maniktala Assembly seat, enclosed in a sealed cover.

After defeating Maniktala in 2021, Sadhan Pande of the Trinamool Congress died in February 2022.

Via an election suit filed in the Calcutta High Court, rival BJP candidate Kalyan Chaubey had contested Pande's victory. The seat has not had representation because a bypoll could not be held due to the election petition.

Local voter Suvendu Dey petitioned the Supreme Court to order the EC to hold the by-election.

The Election Commission was granted one more chance by the court on May 18 to provide the Maniktala bypoll timetable.

The EC's attorney presented a report on the byelection timetable before the bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and K.V. Viswanathan when the issue was called for hearing on Monday. The EC informed the court that the model code of conduct in effect was the reason the report was in a sealed cover.

Judge Viswanathan continued, "The matter ought to be given a quietus in light of the schedule fixed by the EC."

As a result, the court dismissed the case, ruling that no more directives were necessary.
