The nine-day festival of Navratri is devoted to the veneration of Maa Durga in her nine manifestations. The most violent and fiercest manifestation of Maa Durga, Goddess Kalratri, is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri.

Hindu legend holds that Maa Durga created Goddess Kalratri in order to slay the demonic Raktabeej. Raktabeej was a strong demon who had the ability to produce new demons with each drop of his blood. This practically made him unbeatable.

To destroy Raktabeej, Maa Durga assumed the appearance of Goddess Kalratri. Because she swallowed all of his blood, he was unable to summon new demons. As a result, Goddess Kalratri won the conflict with Raktabeej.
