Governor's Removal of Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Sparks Controversy Over Convocation Dispute

In a surprising turn of events, the removal of Jadavpur University's officiating vice-chancellor, Buddhadeb Sau, by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has ignited a heated controversy, particularly surrounding the university's annual convocation. The decision, made on the eve of the convocation, has drawn sharp criticism from West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu.

The focal point of the dispute revolves around the convocation date, which Sau allegedly proceeded with despite not receiving the governor's consent, citing legal issues. The West Bengal Education department had granted approval for the convocation after consultations with both Sau and Registrar Snehamanju Basu, leading to a decision that seemingly clashed with the governor's stance.

Expressing his discontent, Minister Bratya Basu accused the Raj Bhavan of jeopardizing the higher education ambience in the state. In a statement posted on X, he remarked, "It appears that he is hell-bent on destroying the higher education ambience in the state. For that, he is not only disregarding the advice of the elected state government, he has stooped to a new low by disrespecting the interim judgment of the Highest Court of the land."

Jadavpur University Executive Council member and leader of All Bengal University Teachers' Association, Goutam Maity, weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of the convocation for the future of students. Maity revealed that Sau's role was to ensure the convocation occurred on the scheduled date, responding to the demands of students and others.

"Sau was only working to facilitate that the JU convocation is held on the scheduled date as demanded by the students and others. The higher education department responded after being approached by students. Let's hope the Hon'ble governor will see to it that there is no impasse and students don't suffer," Maity stated.
