Jharkhand to Sign Agreement with 9 States for Welfare of Migrant Workers

Jharkhand will sign an agreement with nine states for the welfare of these migratory workers. A large portion of the state's labor force relocates outside of Jharkhand in search of employment.

The cabinet chaired by Hemant Soren in Ranchi on Friday night accepted the state labor department's decision.

"For the care and enhancement of Jharkhand's migrant labor force, the Jharkhand government will sign agreements with nine states. Jharkhand cabinet secretary Ajoy Kumar Singh said, "Under the agreement, the states concerned will have to look after the safety and welfare of the migrant workers from Jharkhand in their respective states."

The following states or union territories—Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala—will sign the agreement with the Jharkhand Labor Department.

"We have chosen the states based on Jharkhand's migrant labor population. These are the designated passageways. The first such agreement in the nation was previously inked by Odisha and the former Andhra Pradesh, according to Rajesh Kumar Sharma, secretary of Jharkhand's labor, employment, training, and skill development department.

In 2011–12, the labor departments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh (before to their split into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) came to an agreement on migrant laborers from Odisha employed in Andhra Pradesh's brick kilns.

Based on information provided by the state migrant control room, there are more than 15 lakh Jharkhandi migrant laborers registered in other states. However, the Economic Survey of 2017 estimates that there are about 50 lakh unregistered migrant workers.

"In response to feedback, we have decided to enter into an agreement with the destination states, building on the various schemes we have launched to address issues and problems of migrant workers." The destination states will assist us in keeping track of the migrant workers in an emergency and assisting us in connecting them with federal and state assistance programs, Sharma said.
