The fact that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are playing in the Twenty20 Internationals against Afghanistan suggests that they will participate in the June World Cup, even if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made a commitment.

According to the Board, the West Indies and USA event, which kicks off on June 1, will use the first half of the IPL as a selection experiment. It is necessary to reveal the temporary squads one month in advance.

After his brilliant starts in the ODI World Cup at home, Rohit was nearly a given to be named captain. The fact that Hardik Pandya has a history of injuries also worked in Rohit's favor.

During the meeting to choose the team that would travel to South Africa, the captain of Team India had expressed to the selection committee his desire in playing the format.

The committee, lead by Ajit Agarkar, had doubts about Kohli because of his poor T20 strike rate. However, the selectors were forced to give Kohli another shot because to his incredible form in the 50-over format.

Since losing to England in the semifinal of the most recent World Cup in Australia, both Rohit and Kohli have not participated in T20Is. The selectors were initially persuaded to reconsider by the young brigade's fearless performance since November 2022, but they ultimately chose to enter with experience.

The Telegraph was informed by sources that the selectors were unable to reach a consensus and need a prompting from the Board in order to announce the squad. To guarantee their spots, both players must, however, fulfill the requirements of the format in the IPL's first phase and the matches against Afghanistan.

It's possible that Kohli and Rohit open the batting so that the latter may get comfortable before Shubman Gill or Suryakumar Yadav bat at No. 3.

There is also a school of thinking that holds that Rohit and Kohli are significant for the US game's branding and marketing. Given that the international organization is working to increase the game's reach in that region, the ICC will be eager for their involvement.

India have named Pandya as their T20I captain since the previous World Cup, with Surya taking the helm in his absence. Due to their nursing injury, neither will be able to watch the upcoming series.

Ishan Kishan has chosen not to participate, saying he needs time away to help him concentrate on his game.

Prior to the five-Test series against England, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested as part of workload management. Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer are also absent.

Pandya, Gill, Rinku Singh, and Surya are all nearly guaranteed spots at the World Cup. The selectors are considering a finisher in the bottom order, so KL Rahul will have to wait. That slot is ideal for Sanju Samson or Jitesh Sharma.

Since Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Ravi Bishnoi are the favorite bowlers, India may have to take a large tail once more. In such cases, the selectors don't have a lot of options, thus the batting needs to be powerful and reliable.
