Leader of Group in Army-like Uniforms at Jadavpur University Arrested and Remanded in Custody

After making an appearance in court on Sunday, the person who had led a group of people wearing army-like uniforms into the Jadavpur University campus last Wednesday has been brought into police custody and has been given detained till September 3.

The individual, identified as Quazi Sadeque Hossain, claimed to be the general secretary of the alleged non-governmental organization (NGO), "Asian Human Rights Commission." The organization first identified itself as being a part of the Indian Army, but then claimed to be a part of the National Human Rights Commission. On Saturday evening, Hossain was taken into custody after extensive interrogation.

"He failed to provide a coherent explanation, and discrepancies were noted in his account," a Calcutta police official said. Numerous fake letterheads and identification cards were found when his home was searched.

Reliable sources state that Hossain appeared before the Alipore court on Sunday and was thereafter detained by police till September 3.
