Mamata Banerjee Urges Unity to Counter BJP's Divisive Politics
Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters during the 'Sanhati Diwas', organised to mark the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, at Shaheed Minar Maidan in Kolkata, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023.

On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee emphasized unity as a defense against possible division, which the BJP would promote in order to win more seats in government.

The leader of the Trinamul Congress was speaking over the phone at an event organized by the party's minority branch to mark the destruction of the Babri Masjid.

At the Sanhati Divas (Integration Day) event, Minister Aroop Biswas was positioned on the dais.

During her speech, Mamata urged the minority community to remain united in order to force the BJP out of power at the Centre next year and warned against succumbing to provocations.

The BJP gains if you are split. "Today is the day to swear allegiance," she declared.

Examining the election outcomes from three states in the heartland of Hindi, the chief minister claimed that the saffron camp had gained from the fragmentation of anti-BJP votes. She emphasized that in order to defeat the BJP, people must vote in large numbers for the candidates who are most qualified, preferably those from her party, in Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha seats.

Mamata said that the people's fundamental rights and civil liberties were at stake in the struggle against the BJP's divisive politics, not just for power.

"The nation is being divided by the BJP. It will get much easier to beat the BJP if we stick together. Thus, maintaining unity is crucial in this circumstance. In the name of religion, they are attempting to split you apart. You shouldn't engage in untrue propaganda and rumors, the speaker stated. Have faith in us. Have faith in us. The BJP will be defeated by the Trinamul Congress.”

Mamata pleaded with the minority population to prevent a split of the votes, hinting at the Indian Secular Front.

She also emphasized the significance of honoring places of worship while issuing a warning against the improper use of their names. She expressed her disapproval of divisive politics and urged people to abstain from it, making a clear reference to the current political dynamics.

Muslim votes combined with Trinamul Congress votes in the 2021 Assembly polls allowed the party to win 120 out of 141 seats with a sizable Muslim population.
