Mahua Moitra Confident of Victory in Krishnanagar, Slams BJP's Alleged Conspiracy

Senior TMC leader Mahua Moitra appears confident about winning by a wider margin in the Lok Sabha election of Krishnanagar. She believes that her victory would be a fitting retaliation for the alleged "conspiracy" to remove her from the Lok Sabha last year and damage her reputation through raids and summonses by central agencies in a cash-for-query case.

She said that even with all the BJP's attempts to "sound the death knell" for constitutional democracy, India is too large for the Nazis to destroy.

After being ousted from the TMC last year, Moitra re-nominated from the same Krishnanagar seat. Moitra accused the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of functioning as "political agents of the saffron camp".

According to Moitra, who spoke with PTI, the Election Commission has "lost its independence" since commissioners are chosen by a selection committee with a two-thirds majority held by the Center.

"There is no denying my triumph. It concerns the margin's size, which will be determined on June 4. I was an MLA before I moved here, and I've been among my people for the last five years. Therefore, there is a really strong link here, and to be honest, there isn't really an election mode," the speaker said.

In the 2019 elections, she won by a margin of more than 60,000 votes, or 45% of the total votes cast.

The 49-year-old lawmaker said, "My victory would be a fitting response to the conspiracy to tarnish my reputation and expel me."

Known for her frank discussions and outspokenness in the Lok Sabha, Moitra was dismissed from the Lower House in December of last year after the findings of a report by the parliamentary Ethics Committee, which found her guilty of receiving gifts and receiving illicit gratification.

Claiming that the BJP has been attempting to undermine democracy in the nation, the former investment banker with JP Morgan Chase described the Ethics committee's decision for his ouster as a "prefixed match by a kangaroo court".

"Since my very first speech in Parliament, I have maintained this position. The BJP is declaring that India's constitutional democracy is doomed. However, she said, "India is too great a country to be destroyed by these fascist thugs."

When asked why the people in her constituency would accept her version of events rather than the one spread by the BJP, Moitra said that she was a product of the land.

"Karmabhoomi and Dharmabhoomi, this is me. "I have the full support of my people," she said.

Even though the cash-for-query scandal abruptly ended her first tenure as a lawmaker, it unquestionably raised her profile within the party, garnering the unflinching support of both the opposition and the top leadership of the TMC.

Speaking about the Enforcement Directorate's summons and the CBI searches on her property, which she has ignored, Moitra said that organizations are an essential component of the BJP.

In response to accusations made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, which she denied, the anti-corruption watchdog Lokpal ordered the CBI to search her residence in connection with the cash-for-query issue.

Furthermore, she and businessman Darshan Hiranandani have received further summonses from the Enforcement Directorate for interrogation about a case alleging a violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Though she voiced doubts about the poll panel taking any action on the issue, Moitra recently protested to the EC, claiming that the BJP was using the CBI and the ED to sabotage her campaign and damage her reputation before the polls.

"The independence of the EC has now been gone. The prime minister and the home minister choose the commissioners by hand with a two-thirds majority. 200 names were available for selection in less than 30 minutes (two Election Commissioners were added when Arun Goel resigned last month). She said, "The entire exercise is a farce."

Opposition leaders and political parties continue to write to the EC, according to the former MLA for the Karimpur seat in the West Bengal Assembly, because "we need to write and record it for history, and that is also important."

When asked whether she will continue to criticize the saffron party on policy matters with the same fervor if re-elected, Moitra said, "What do you think...?" I'll return to my chair and shout praises to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Moitra has filed many challenges in the Supreme Court contesting different policies implemented by the Narendra Modi administration, and he had often questioned the Center's role in the growth of a private conglomerate's assets.

In response to a question on whether the BJP-led NDA can be overthrown given that the opposition INDIA alliance is struggling to get momentum in the majority of the states, Moitra said, "The people make the final decisions." I believe in the human race. Though it could take longer, it will happen. The TMC leader said that her electorate, which includes a sizable Matua community, would not be significantly impacted by the adoption of CAA laws.

"There are more Matua people living in the nearby seat of Ranaghat. This represents a minor portion. However, considering that they have been receiving all state benefits for the previous years, Matua organizations are really advising their members not to register for CAA and to identify themselves as undocumented aliens, she added.

Moitra was alluding to a guideline issued by All India Matua Mahasangha, which instructed its followers not to apply for citizenship if they did not have the required documentation indicating they had previously lived in Bangladesh.

When questioned about "Rajmata" Amrita Roy of the Krishnanagar Royal family, her opponent from the saffron wing, she said the candidate had no bearing on her.

"I am fighting the symbol of the BJP." Who they have posted doesn't disturb me too much. The findings will be presented on June 4th, she said.
