Siliguri, West Bengal: In a bold declaration, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted on Tuesday that Bengal would not just lead India but also guide other nations, setting the stage for a potentially pivotal role in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Her statement comes amidst the Congress's recent electoral setbacks and ahead of the crucial fourth meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

Banerjee's Vision and Criticism:

  • Leadership Claim: Channeling the spirit of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Banerjee declared, "From our Bengal, we will lead India. From our state, we will show the way to all nations." This bold statement places Bengal at the forefront of her vision for India's future.
  • Call for Restructuring: Banerjee also called for a restructured INDIA alliance, suggesting that the Congress's traditional "big brotherly" approach needs to be replaced with a more collaborative leadership. Sources within Trinamool hint at a potential collective leadership structure involving regional powerhouses like Banerjee and DMK chief M.K. Stalin.
  • Congress Criticism: Taking a swipe at the Congress, Banerjee attributed the BJP's recent victories in Hindi heartland states to their internal issues. She expressed confidence that a united INDIA with a fair seat-sharing formula (the 1:1 formula) could defeat the BJP in 2024.

Tensions with the Center:

The continuous hostility between Banerjee's administration and the BJP-led Centre was also brought up in her address.By withholding development money for Bengal, including vital programs like MGNREGA and Awas Yojana, she charged them of engaging in dirty politics. She promised to keep fighting for Bengal's fair share, and on December 20th, she even had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the matter.

Grassroots Initiatives and Public Support:

Meanwhile, Banerjee showcased her commitment to public welfare by launching two key initiatives:

  • Krishak Bondhu: This state-funded scheme provides financial assistance to farmers, with Rs. 2,806 crore being transferred directly to the bank accounts of 1.01 crore beneficiaries.
  • Sabooj Sathi: This program distributes bicycles to schoolchildren, with 12.24 lakh students receiving them this year.
