Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, won eight awards on Monday, including best picture, best director, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr.

With six honors, including best comedy and best song (I'm Just Ken), Greta Gerwig's Barbie came in second.


Throughout the evening, Emma Stone upset Lily Gladstone to win the best actress Oscar for her work in Poor Things, upending the standings in the race for the Oscars (for Killers of the Flower Moon). With his outstanding performance in The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti won the best actor trophy, defeating Cillian Murphy, who was up for the Oppenheimer award.

The evening's host was talk show host and well-known comedian Chelsea Handler.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the best supporting actress prize for The Holdovers, alongside Paul Giamatti, Emma Stone, and Robert Downey Jr. Dominic Sessa won the best young actor prize for the same film. Oppenheimer won home the best acting ensemble prize this year.

Oppenheimer maintained his dominance in the technical categories, taking home awards for best visual effects, best editing (Jennifer Lame), and best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema). Ludwig Göransson received the best score prize in recognition of his outstanding work on the movie.

Barbie's victory

Barbie proved to be a formidable force, winning awards for best production design, best costume design, best hair and makeup, and praise for its unique screenplay written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

Particular recognition

Hollywood legend Harrison Ford took home the Career Achievement Award, while America Ferrera was recognized for her services to the entertainment business with the SeeHer Award.

Additional highlights

The greatest animated film was named Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron defeated the Sony Pictures production. Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet, won best foreign language film. The Palme d'Or was awarded to Triet's courtroom thriller at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
