President Murmu calls for social equality and unity to achieve development

Mahatma Gandhi's ideals of social equality and togetherness were recommended by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday in order for the nation to advance to a modern, developed state.

"During the Champaran Satyagraha, people abandoned caste barriers, particularly with regard to food security. Together, they prepared and dined. The British empire was compelled to submit by the social equality and unity that were started 106 years ago by Mahatma Gandhi, the President stated.

"Mahatma Gandhi's vision of social equality and unity is still relevant today. It ought to be the cornerstone upon which we achieve our objective of turning into a developed country in the contemporary era," she continued.

Speaking at the Mahatma Gandhi Central University convocation at Motihari, in the East Champaran region of Bihar, she was the chief guest. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Governor Rajendra Arlekar were present for the event.

"I've been informed that girls make up 55% of the students in attendance at the convocation, and many of the highest scorers are also female. This is a positive step forward. You all need to uphold the honor of the medical community."

Murmu, the nation's first elected president from a schedule tribe, further stated that Gandhi had once supported scholarly research on "janjatis" (tribes).

The President recalled Gandhi's close association with British-born anthropologist and ethnographer Verrier Elwin, who immigrated to India and dedicated his life to researching the tribes of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra and supporting the national movement.
