Presumed Innocent Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Fights for Innocence in Legal Thriller
A still of Jake Gyllenhaal in Presumed Innocent trailer.

The legal drama series Presumed Innocent on Apple TV has a mystery murder of a colleague who had an affair, and in the official trailer released by the streamer on Wednesday, Jake Gyllenhaal's character Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor by trade, finds himself in the crosshairs of detectives.

The two-minute, twenty-five-second film opens with a picture of Rusty, the undertrial, and Gyllenhaal's voiceover saying, "I did not kill her." The scene after that depicts a happy moment he shares with his family over breakfast. These humorous times, though, are short-lived as he is informed of his colleague Carolyn's death. To make matters more worse, Rusty is forced to acknowledge that he had a love relationship with Carolyn when he is questioned by his superiors.

Rusty is adamant about not having killed his colleague. When word spreads that he was in Carolyn's apartment the night she was killed, things grow worse. Despite going through the "darkest time of her life," his wife Barbara supports her husband after learning of his infidelity.

In the final moments of the teaser, Rusty can be seen repeatedly attempting to disprove his guilt by emphasizing the phrase "I did not kill her." He has to fight his way through a convoluted legal struggle to maintain his innocence as the evidence against him grows, exposing corruption and untold stories along the process.

The 1987 book Innocent by Scott Turow served as the basis for Presumed Innocent. In the 1990 film adaptation of the same name, Greta Scacchi played Carolyn and Harrison Ford played Rusty Sabich. The Alan J. Pakula-directed original picture is a compelling legal thriller that examines issues of moral uncertainty, justice, and betrayal.

In the series, Gyllenhaal plays top deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, a compelling character who upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney's office when one of its own is suspected of a heinous murder. The official series synopsis for Apple TV states, "As the accused struggles to keep his family and marriage together, the series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love."

Presumed Innocent, an eight-episode series directed by David E. Kelley and produced by J.J. Abrams, will debut on Apple TV on June 12.
