Rahul Gandhi Questions Modi Government's Priorities: Farmers vs. Corporates

Rahul Gandhi has questioned why the Narendra Modi administration was so unwilling to spend even a little amount of money on farmers, given that it purportedly paid off debts of Rs 14 lakh crore taken out by the wealthy and granted corporates an annual tax break of Rs 1.8 lakh crore.

The former president of the Congress said on social networking site X: "Since the Congress promised a legal guarantee for MSP, the Modi-friendly media and his propaganda apparatus have rained lies on MSP (minimum support price)." The assertion that the financial restrictions make it impossible to provide a legal guarantee for MSP is untrue.

"The truth is that according to an estimate by CRISIL (a global analytics company), giving MSP to farmers in 2022–2023 would have required an additional Rs 21,000 crore, which is merely 0.4 per cent of the budget," Rahul said. Why has a little expenditure for farmers become such a divisive topic in a nation where a bank debt worth Rs 14 lakh crore was wiped off and corporate tax breaks of Rs 1.8 lakh crore were granted?

The monetary burden on the national exchequer if the MSP is provided on all crops has been estimated by several pro-establishment analysts to be between Rs 10 lakh crore and Rs 15 lakh crore. This analysis has been refuted by the farmers' unions, and Rahul has recently maintained that strong agricultural development would boost the economy. "Investment in agriculture will be encouraged by the MSP guarantee," he said. This will increase demand in rural areas and promote crop diversity. This will turn into a guarantee of the success of the country. M.S. Swaminathan's aspirations are being insulted by those who disseminate false information about the MSP. India's farmers would no longer be a financial burden but rather the engine driving GDP development with an MSP guarantee.
