According to a statement from his family, Shane MacGowan, the lead singer and songwriter of the Celtic punk band The Pogues, passed away on Thursday at the age of 65.

The family statement was posted on behalf of MacGowan's father Maurice, sister Siobhan, and wife Victoria Mary Clarke by The Pogues' official Instagram account. "We announce Shane MacGowan's passing with the utmost sadness and heavy hearts. According to the statement, Shane passed away quietly this morning, November 30, 2023, at 3 a.m. with his wife Victoria and family by his side.

The band members stated that prayers and final ceremonies for MacGowan had been completed, and that more information will be released as soon as Shane's family feels comfortable sharing it.

The Pogues were a forerunner in the Celtic punk scene when they were founded in London in 1982. Their band leader, MacGowan, was inspired by Irish culture and nationalism and wanted to fuse the strength of Irish folk music with the rock scene. The Pogues' unique sound was influenced by the use of traditional Irish instruments like the accordion and tin whistle.

Even though MacGowan would face personal challenges throughout his career, such as alcoholism, his turbulent life has only enhanced the authenticity and unadulterated emotion found in his songs. MacGowan continued to put out solo albums like The Snake (1994) and Crock of Gold (1997) after he left The Pogues in 1991.

One of the best lyricists in music, Shane will always be cherished. In a statement following MacGowan's passing, Michael D. Higgins, the president of Ireland, said, "The genius of Shane's contribution includes the fact that his songs capture within them, as Shane would put it, the measure of our dreams - of so many worlds, and particularly those of love, of the emigrant experience and of facing the challenges of that experience with authenticity and courage, and of living and seeing the sides of life that so many turn away from."
