Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of Trinamul, reaffirmed on Tuesday his commitment to fight for those who are "deprived" under the Narendra Modi government, highlighting the BJP's ongoing attacks on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which bears the name of the assassinated January 30, 1948, Father of the Nation.

"It is sad to see the disrespect shown to our employees today as a result of the vile insults committed against MGNREGS, the program that carries his name. Abhishek posted on X, "On the anniversary of Gandhiji's passing, I humbly swear to continue the noble fight to defend the rights of the deprived."

Abhishek recalled Gandhiji as saying, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others," before launching a pointed criticism of the BJP's strategy.

This statement by Abhishek, the leader of the Delhi movement seeking MGNREGS dues, is significant, according to a source, given that chief minister Mamata Banerjee threatened to hold a dharna if the Centre did not provide Bengal with funding by February 1 at the latest.

For the last three months, Trinamul had played down the funding problem while political activity on the ground had been suspended due to an alleged dispute between the party's establishment and its younger members.

Didi reopened the debate yesterday (Monday) and vowed to launch a movement on February 2. The second in the party adopted the same stance today (Tuesday). We anticipate that the party will now present a more forceful campaign against central deprivation. According to a top Trinamul politician, "the poor people of Bengal have started believing that the BJP government has been depriving the state."

On Tuesday, Trinamul presented the story to highlight how the BJP has been attempting to undermine Gandhiji's principles by denying citizens and disparaging women in the nation. The party also organized a march against the "deprivation" that the Modi administration was imposing in areas like Hooghly's Goghat.

In addition, the women's section of Trinamul organized 34 protests throughout Bengal to voice opposition to the BJP's alleged mistreatment of women.

"To honor the Father of the Nation, we hosted 34 demonstrations. On this day, we also protested against the BJP's strategy of demeaning women, particularly Mamata Banerjee, the sole female chief minister of the nation. "We shall persist in our protests against the BJP for all such transgressions," said Chandrima Bhattacharya, the head of the Trinamul women's faction.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi drew criticism from Trinamul for "mocking" Mamata at a rally ahead of the 2021 elections.
