BJP and Trinamool Clash Over Bengal Global Business Summit

On Monday, the BJP and the Trinamul Congress clashed over the efficacy of the seventh edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), which is scheduled to take place in this location on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP published a statement and a video on X that ridiculed the BGBS and the current government.

"Tomorrow marks the start of another public-funded jamboree, as the 7th edition of BGBS is scheduled for November 21 and 22! This BGBS meeting isn't about business and isn't even somewhat global; all the people of Bengal will be served are glossy lies! The head of the opposition in the Bengal Assembly, Adhikari, wrote.

Would the Chief Minister please let the West Bengali public know what percentage of the 15.7 lakh CRORE Rupees in planned investments—which were raised during the six prior BGBS editions—have actually been put into practice? Please make public the locations where it was implemented and provide a list of people who were hired as a result of the investment," he continued.

Despite being in power for more than 12 years, the opposition in Bengal has been aggressive in its criticism of the Mamata Banerjee government's "failure" to revive the state's industrialization in the traditional sense.

Adhikari and other BJP members had asked the chief minister and her administration in September for an explanation of the yield in relation to the damage done to the cash-strapped state coffers during her visit to Spain and the United Arab Emirates.

"Let me question her, on behalf of the people of West Bengal, what happened to Deocha Pachami, where she declared the creation of two lakh jobs? Has even a single kilogram of coal been taken out of the mines there? And what is the present situation with Tajpur Port, for which the Agreement was ceremoniously signed? questioned MLA Nandigram.

Bengal Global Business Summit is not what BGBS is. It's a two-day Mamata-made-Mirage, purposefully presented as an oasis in West Bengal's desolate desert of deindustrialization, to mislead the public into thinking Bengal is experiencing an economic boom, he continued.

Adhikari continued, saying that Bengal doesn't mean business when Mamata Banerjee is in charge of affairs. Fake MOUs, ambiguous Expressions of Interest, and letters of intent that are thrown in the trash are all part of BGBS. In actuality, BGBS is really a front for the Businesses' Graveyard in a Bankrupt State.

Kunal Ghosh, the general secretary of Trinamul State, also posted on X and tagged Adhikari.

He added, "7 out of LoP @SuvenduWB's 8-minute, 32-second video talks about the ₹15,74,892 crores worth of investment proposals received across the 6 editions of BGBS, debunking his misguided attempt to discredit BGBS and its undeniable achievements."

"To enlighten Mr. Adhikari, I'll have him know that: West Bengal's GVA comes from industries and manufacturing; the State is home to India's second highest number of MSMEs; Bengal's GDP has been growing at a rate of 12.6%, surpassing the national average; It increased threefold from ₹4.74 lakh crore in 2011 to ₹14.44 lakh crore in 2020-21," he continued. "Your ostrich attitude won't alter Bengal's thriving industrial landscape's reality!"
