Beloved comedian and Emmy winner leaves behind legacy of humor and impact
André Braugher, the Emmy-winning star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, passed away at the age of 61. Braugher portrayed Captain Raymond Holt in the beloved comedy series.
The actor passed away on Monday, according to his publicist, following a "brief illness."
Braugher, who was well-known for his rich baritone, is survived by his three sons and actor-wife Ami Brabson.
From 1993 to 1998, Braugher portrayed the accomplished police officer Detective Frank Pembleton on the NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street, which ran for seven seasons. Later, he decided to step away from serious parts and give his characters in later shows a humorous touch.
In the Fox-NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Braugher portrayed Captain Raymond Holt, the first openly gay police chief. The comedic tone of the show was perfectly complemented by his deadpan delivery.
As soon as the news broke, the late actor's Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars posted their condolences on social media. After learning of Braugher's passing, Terry Crews, who portrayed Lieutenant Terry Jeffords in the show, wrote that he was in pain. "It's hard to believe you're gone already. It is a privilege to have had the opportunity to work, laugh, and watch your incredible talent with you for eight wonderful years. It aches to do this.
Dirk Blocker, who portrayed Detective Michael Hitchcock on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, characterized Braugher as exceptionally talented, deeply intelligent, and extraordinarily kind. He was also supportive and generous. In his writing, he also spoke of the nine years they had spent working on the show as a "blessing."

Detective Charles Boyle's actor Joe Lo Truglio expressed his sympathy to Braugher's wife and kids, saying that "he loved very much and flew back every weekend from the show to be with."
It's likely unknown to you that Andre was also a talented singer. He would frequently perform at lunch, sending his dressing room full of bass-heavy tunes to whatever new song he happened to find.I'm already missing him terribly. Working with a man who understood the true meaning of the work was truly an honor. I'm grateful and feel blessed. Capt. Holt, I miss you. Porkchop, I love you," he said.
The actor Marc Evan Jackson, who portrayed Captain Holt's spouse on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, posted a photo of the two of them together. "Have mercy, captain. "My Captain," he wrote as the picture's caption.
