At the 96th Academy Awards on Monday (IST), eight-time Oscar candidate Christopher Nolan won his first best director prize for the biographical thriller Oppenheimer.

In the race for best director, Nolan faced off against Yorgos Lanthimos (for Poor Things), Justine Triet (for Anatomy of a Fall), and Martin Scorsese (for Killers of the Flower Moon).

Even though he was nominated for big-budget films like The Dark Knight and Inception, Christopher Nolan has never won the best director Oscar. This year's memorable event was further enhanced by the presence of legendary director Steven Spielberg, who gave Nolan the coveted prize.

In his victory speech, Christopher Nolan remarked, "Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. We don't know where this incredible journey is going from here." But it means the world to me to know that you believe I have a significant role in it.

This Oscar victory is the most recent honor that Nolan and Oppenheimer have received. For the movie, the director has already won best director prizes at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), the Critics Choice Awards, and the Golden Globes.
