The Congress claimed on Thursday that the Narendra Modi administration had become very nervous about the nation's shifting electoral landscape and had, like a dictator, turned to political and financial "terrorism" to destroy the opposition in the run-up to the parliamentary election.

The Congress used searches on the homes of former governor Satya Pal Malik and his colleagues, as well as the harsh crackdown on farmers, to support its accusations of financial terrorism, even as it detailed what it termed "dacoity" on its bank accounts. In a desperate attempt to hold onto power, the party's senior leadership publicly said that a "dictator" was planning to destroy the opposition.

On X, Rahul Gandhi wrote: "Shoot the farmers if they demand MSP." Is that the democracy's mother? After selection, if the young person requests an appointment, ignore them. Is that the democracy's mother? Launch the CBI on a former governor who tells the truth. Is that the democracy's mother? Put the main opposition party's finances on hold. The mother of democracy, is that?

"Is that mother of democracy? Section 144, the Internet ban, barbed wire, tear gas shells," he said. Crush all the truth-seeking voices on social media and in the media. Is that the democracy's mother? The populace knows that you have destroyed democracy, Modi ji, and they will respond accordingly.

When he travels overseas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi likes to refer to India as the “Mother of Democracy,” almost as a defense against the mounting allegation that the country's democracy is eroding.

"An autocratic Modi government is capturing democracy through extortion and financial terrorism," said Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress.

He claimed, "The BJP received donations from at least 30 firms, after it misused CBI, income tax, and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to raid them," while denouncing the purported seizure of Rs 65 crore belonging to the party. Additionally, reports indicate that in the months that followed the searches, a number of these companies gave the BJP a larger donation. Blackmailing contributors and pillaging the opposition to bolster the BJP's finances is a sad period in our democracy.

Jairam Ramesh, the party's head of communications, also made reference to the most recent "expose," which showed how 30 private businesses were cleared following investigations by federal authorities and were later discovered to have given the BJP Rs 335 crore. Ramesh said, "This is extortion using CBI-ED and income tax," clarifying that the information was accessible on the Election Commission website and that these contributions were not made via electoral bonds.
