Delhi Police Enhance Security at PM Modi's Residence Amid AAP's 'Gherao' Protest
Movement Likely to be Affected in Parts of the National Capital
Following the AAP's call for a "gherao" to protest Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's detention, the Delhi Police stepped up security at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home, an officer said on Tuesday.
Additionally, the police have increased security in a number of other areas of the nation's capital.
According to a Delhi Traffic Police officer, the demonstration is probably going to cause traffic problems in some areas of Central and New Delhi.
Strong security measures have been put in place. To preserve peace and order in the region, we have put in multiple levels of protection," the Delhi Police officer stated.
"Section 144 (of the CrPC) is already imposed around the prime minister's residence and no one will be allowed to protest," he stated.
Minister for Delhi Gopal Rai had already declared that he will "gherao" the prime minister's mansion on Tuesday in opposition to Kejriwal's detention.
Rai has also declared that there will be "mega protests" across the country.
On March 21, Kejriwal was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to a money-laundering case that was connected to the excise scheme that was later repealed. He will remain under the agency's care until Thursday.
The central agency has stated that the AAP national convenor is accused of requesting bribes from alcohol vendors in exchange for favors.
In addition, the ED has charged Kejriwal with working with AAP leaders, ministers, and other individuals as the "kingpin and key conspirator" behind the now-cancelled policy.
Rejecting the accusations, Kejriwal charged that the Centre, led by the BJP, was "manipulating investigative agencies for political motives".
In light of the protest, the Delhi Traffic Police has set up seven diversion points to ensure that traffic moves smoothly.
"Commuters must avoid Kemal Ataturk Marg, Safdarjung Road, Akbar Road and Teen Murti Marg on Tuesday in view of the protest," a police officer stated.
