Five Arrested in Attack on Ramakrishna Mission Property in Siliguri
Policemen posted at the Ramakrishna Mission in Siliguri on Wednesday.

Five people were detained by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police on suspicion of being involved in last Sunday's attack on a Ramakrishna Mission property near Sevoke Road in Siliguri.

The deputy commissioner of police (east), Dipak Sarkar, said reporters on Wednesday that the five people who had been arrested had been involved in the attack.

He claimed that following the event on Sunday, the secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission section in Jalpaiguri lodged a complaint with the Bhaktinagar police station.

We opened an investigation and detained five people in response to the complaint. A few more people are still at large, including the main accused, Pradip Roy. "We are searching for them," Sarkar remarked.

Of the five people who have been arrested, four are from Bhaktinagar: Shambhu Mahato, Shambhu Das, Debasish Sarkar, and Shyamal Baidya; the fifth, Rajib Basak, is from Matigara, which is on the northwest outskirts of Siliguri.

A bunch of thugs had stormed into RKM's property, Sewak Bhavan, early on Sunday. They had beaten five RKM employees and two security officers before forcing them into a car. They were later set free in several areas close to New Jalpaiguri station and threatened with severe repercussions.

The RKM administrators then complained to the police about this. In a countercomplaint, Roy also accused some other people and a monk at RKM of threatening him. Roy had stated that he is the property's legitimate owner.

Police had sealed the property after the event. Police have been stationed at the now-vacant building grounds since Tuesday night.

The DCP stated, "We took this action to preserve the location where the incident occurred undisturbed."

Tukra Singh owned the 1.59-acre plot of property where the two-story building is situated, the police discovered during their inquiry.

Pradip Roy asserted in his complaint that it was his ancestor's land. But we don't believe him when we discover that Tukra Singh originally sold the land to someone who then sold it to Sunil Kumar Roy, who gave it to the Ramakrishna Mission," a police source said.

According to sources, the RKM officials have started the process of altering the property and should get it within a month.

The five people detained in connection with the case were ordered to spend five days in police custody by the Jalpaiguri additional chief judicial magistrate's court later in the day, according to sources.
