On Friday morning, angry residents set fire to TMC officials' residences in Sandeshkhali, a troubled region in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, accusing them of sexually abusing women and taking property via force.

With sticks in hand, they attacked the elusive TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his brother Siraj by setting thatched buildings on fire next to a fishing yard in the Belmajur neighborhood of Sandeshkhali. It turned out that Siraj was the owner of the burned-down building.

"The cops took no action for years. We are making every effort to reclaim our country and honor because of this," a demonstrator stated.

Later, the police arrived and made an effort to calm the demonstrators.

The new demonstrations took place one day after Sandeshkhali saw protests and burning in several areas due to accusations made against local TMC officials for forced land acquisition and sexual assault.

Following DGP Rajeev Kumar's declaration that the guilty would not be spared, there were these protests.

The disturbances in Sandeshkhali are due to allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault made against TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his associates. Shahjahan has been eluding law enforcement since a January 5 mob attack on Enforcement Directorate agents.
