Kolkata Likely to Escape Heavy Rainfall from Cyclone Midhili

According to the Met office, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal that is expected to strengthen into a cyclone would probably only have an influence on cloudy weather and "light to moderate" rainfall in the city.

It is anticipated that the system will intensify into a cyclone between Thursday night and midnight, and it will most likely arrive in Bangladesh early on Saturday.

The Maldives will christen the system Midhili after it turns into a cyclone.

On Friday, Kolkata is probably going to get mild to moderate rain along with thunder. It's possible that it may rain on Saturday as well. Thunderclaps are probably going to accompany the rain, according to G.K. Das, the head of the regional Met office in Alipore.

Rain is also predicted for Howrah, Hooghly, West Midnapore, East Midnapore, North-24 Parganas, South-24 Parganas, Nadia, and West Midnapore on Friday and Saturday. In East Midnapore, Howrah, and North and South 24 Parganas, there's a chance of heavy rain.

According to Das, Kolkata is probably going to avoid significant rainfall for two reasons. One is that Kolkata is too far away for the storm to have any direct effects on it; the storm's potential landfall zone is in Bangladesh, between Mongla and Khepupara.

Another explanation is that northeasterly winds are blowing into Kolkata. They are traveling across northeastern India to get to the system.

"Directly from the Bay, southeasterly winds carry more moisture than those that pass through northeastern India," said Das.

The right side of Kolkata is where the system is expected to pass. The winds of a cyclone are counterclockwise. The winds would have approached Kolkata straight from the Bay if the system had been to Kolkata's left, he added.

On Friday, the city was continuously overcast, although there wasn't much precipitation.

Rain briefly stopped play during the semi-final match at Eden Gardens at about 5 p.m.

Das attributed this to the same factor: the predominance of winds from the northeast.

The winds will become stronger when the storm approaches the Bengal-Odisha coast. After that, it's anticipated that the city will get some rain.
