Manipur government to restore internet connectivity in 5 days, says BJP government

Within five days, "restore internet connectivity" will be made available in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur, according to the BJP government, "subject to an assessment of law and order condition."

Following back-to-back talks with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar, the administration and the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) signed a "memorandum of agreement" on Thursday night that included the assurance.

According to the MoA, the government called a "emergency meeting" with the ANSAM to discuss the suspension of the Internet and the demand to release the results of a recruitment exam aimed at hiring 190 assistant professors "on a contract for one academic session" that took place in September 2021.

The emergency meeting resulted from the picketing that ANSAM members had been conducting at government buildings in Naga-inhabited districts since Tuesday. Their demands included the announcement of the job interview results and the restoration of Internet connectivity in "peaceful areas."

Members of ANSAM claimed that the unrest had interfered with government operations in parts of the state inhabited by Naga people, where on May 3 violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.

In the chaos, approximately 67,000 people have been displaced and at least 177 people have died.
