Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis to Collaborate on New Lord of the Rings Film Series

Warner Bros. said in an official announcement that Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis will be collaborating to develop a new film series based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga.

The Hunt for Gollum, the first movie in this new series, is scheduled for release in 2026. Serkis will direct while Jackson will handle production.

David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, reportedly stated during an investor conference call that the project is "now in the early stages of script development," according to the US entertainment magazine Deadline. He further stated that Jackson "will be involved every step of the way" with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

"It is both a privilege and a thrill to venture back to Middle-earth alongside our excellent colleague and friend, Andy Serkis, who shares a personal feud with that infamous creature – Gollum!” Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens stated in a statement, expressing their enthusiasm for the project.

Andy Serkis shared a "selfie" on Facebook featuring Gollum along with the message, "We is baaaack, Precious!"

In the meantime, J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay's fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, on Amazon Prime Video, is preparing for its second season. The series is mostly based on the novel's appendices, The Lord of the Rings, which is set thousands of years before the events of the book and is inspired by Tolkien's Middle-earth history. This magnificent story of Middle-earth's Second Age is brought to life by a partnership between Amazon Studios and New Line Cinema.
