Under its new Restored masterpieces section, the 54th edition of the foreign Film Festival of India (IFFI) is showcasing carefully restored Indian and foreign masterpieces.
Three great Bollywood films are on display, including Bees Saal Baad (1962) directed by Biren Nag, Haqeeqat (1964) directed by Chetan Anand, and Guide (1965) directed by Vijay Anand.
Regional language filmmaking is also honored in the Restored Classics area, which features films such as Debaki Bose's 1937 Bengali film Vidyapati, P.K. Are's 1953 Marathi film Shyamchi Aai, K.V. Reddy's 1951 Telugu film Patala Bhairavi, and Mrinal Sen's 1974 Bengali film Chorus.
There was a time when damaged celluloid reels threatened to destroy these films. The initiatives have allowed for the restoration to occur.
