Sigourney Weaver to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Venice Film Festival
Acclaimed Actress Honored for Career Spanning Sci-Fi, Action, and Art-House Films
According to a statement released by the organizers on Friday, Sigourney Weaver, the seasoned actress most known for her part in Ridley Scott's 1979 science fiction picture Alien, will be honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at this year's Venice Film Festival.
"There are not many actresses who can match Sigourney Weaver's caliber," stated Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the festival, in a statement.
Barbera added, "The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement is simply recognition for a star who has created links between the most avant-garde art-house film and films that interact with the public in a candid and unique way, all the while staying true to herself."
"She has created the image of a woman who is self-assured and determined, dynamic and resolute; at the same time, with endlessly different shadings, she allows her intensely magnetic, feminine sensitivity to filter through," Barbera continued. "Ended with a remarkable temperament, able to move with delicacy yet without fragility."

Weaver responded to the announcement by thanking La Biennale di Venezia and stating that she felt incredibly honored to have received the medal. "It is an honor I share with all the filmmakers and partners I have worked with over the years to get this award. In honor of everyone who has contributed to making these movies a reality, I humbly accept this award," she remarked.
The American actor, who won two Golden Globes and a Grammy Award, rose to recognition in the film Alien as Ellen Ripley. She returned to the character of Aliens in James Cameron's 1986 film, which led to her first Academy Award nomination. She went on to star in two more Aliens movies, the successful Avatar movie, and Ghostbusters.
The dates of the 81st Venice International Film Festival are set for August 28 through September 7.
