Tamil Film "The Adamant Girl" Makes Berlinale Forum Shortlist, Highlighting Global Voices
Berlinale Forum Seeks Films Bridging Real Worlds and Public Impact, From Tamil Exorcism Drama to Argentinian Prison Musical
On the official website of the upcoming film gala, the organizers have announced that P.S. Vinothraj's film, The Adamant Girl (Kottukkaali), a film from Tamil cinema, has been shortlisted for the 54th Berlinale Forum, a branch of the Berlin International Film Festival.
"We want to bridge the gap between the real worlds we live in and a cinema aware of its public impact by being open and resolute in dealing with cinematic forms," Forum head Barbara Wurm stated in a statement.
A primary emphasis of the selection is on areas that are not located in the hubs of the Western film industry. Wurm continued, "We are searching for worldly films that go beyond self-referentiality—but those that get involved."
In the film The Adamant Girl, a family struggles to perform an exorcism on their daughter, who is silent and has a romantic relationship going on with a man from a lower caste.
The event will mark the world premiere of Reas, the musical documentary by Argentinean director Lola Arias. The fascinating documentary Reas explores the lives of transgender and cisgender inmates in a Buenos Aires jail.
Lana Gogoberidze, a 93-year-old filmmaker, explores her mother Nutsa's life, Georgia's first female filmmaker, in her film Mother And Daughter, which adds a touch of history and familial legacy. The centerpiece of the Forum Special section is also this global premiere.
The lineup features films such as Abdenour Zahzah's True Chronicles of the Blida Joinville Psychiatric Hospital in the Last Century, when Dr. Frantz Fanon Was Head of the Fifth Ward between 1953 and 1956 from Algeria-France; Jin Jiang's Republic from Singapore-China; Anja Salomonowitz's Sleeping With A Tiger from Austria; and others.
On February 6, the complete schedule for the esteemed festival—which is set for February 15–25, 2024—will be revealed.
