Two-Time Major Winner Garbiñe Muguruza Announces Retirement from Tennis

Garbiñe Muguruza, the two-time major winner, declared her retirement from professional tennis at the age of thirty following a prolonged hiatus from the game.

"I think it's time to step back and start a new chapter in my life," the former world number one stated during a press conference on Saturday in Madrid.

Muguruza became the first player to defeat both of the Williams sisters in a Grand Slam title match when she defeated Serena Williams in the 2016 French Open final and Venus Williams in the 2017 Wimbledon final.

The Spanish player finished second in both the 2020 Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2015 in addition to winning ten career titles. 13th on the all-time list, she concluded with a win-loss record of 449-238 and approximately $25 million in prize money.

Her most significant triumph came in the 2021 ATP Finals.

"I am only thirty years old, so the word retirement sounds very harsh, but since I started playing 25 years ago, I have accomplished so much," she remarked.

"I am proud of what I have accomplished because I persisted in pursuing my objectives despite hardships."

Muguruza stopped performing in January 2023. She said in April of that year that she would be prolonging her break from performing, adding, "Spending time with my family and friends (has) really been healthy and amazing."

Muguruza, who was born in Caracas to a Venezuelan mother and a Spanish father, relocated to Barcelona as a young girl in order to pursue her tennis career. At the 1998 French Open, she became the first Spanish woman to lift a Grand Slam championship since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario.
