Vir Das Wins International Emmy for Outstanding Comedy

The International Emmy Award for outstanding comedy went to actor-comic Vir Das for his stand-up special "Vir Das: Landing," according to the organizers.

Late on Monday night, the 51st International Emmy Awards Gala took place at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City.

For Das, this was both his second nomination and first victory in the category. Das and the popular British adolescent comedy "Derry Girls" season three split the award.

Winning the best comedy International Emmy is "an incredible honor that feels like a dream," Das remarked.

It is significant not just for me personally but also for Indian humor in general that I won an Emmy for 'Vir Das: Landing' in the 'humor Category.'" Das released a statement saying, "It's encouraging to see 'Vir Das: Landing' resonate globally, thanks to Netflix, Aakash Sharma, and Reg Tigerman who made it special."

Das is the first comedian from India to accomplish the same achievement.

"It has been difficult and fulfilling for me to go from telling local tales to winning an international award, and Netflix has been a big part of that progress. From Noida to the International Emmys, India gets you there, therefore I'm enthused about the ongoing investigation of many storylines," he stated.

Das, who has previously acted in movies including "Go Goa Gone" and "Delhi Belly," took home the prize for his fourth Netflix special, "Vir Das: Landing," which explores what it means to be genuinely global while searching for one's place in the world.

In 2021, Vir Das: For India, his previous stand-up special, received a nomination for an International Emmy in the best comedy category.

"El Encargado" from Argentina and the second season of "Le Flambeau" from France were the other candidates in the best comedy category.

The International Emmys are held annually by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with the objective of recognizing "the world's best television".

The International Emmy Directorate Award was given to renowned producer Ektaa R Kapoor in recognition of her noteworthy contribution to the entertainment and arts industries.

Co-founder of the production company Balaji Telefilms, Kapoor expressed her happiness at winning the coveted prize. She is the first female Indian filmmaker to get this honour.

"Being honored on this international level makes me very happy and joyful. Storytelling has always been a passion of mine since it allows me to be seen, heard, and represented. She stated in a statement, "I am appreciative of the support from the fans, which has given me the opportunity to go beyond television into the worlds of movies and over-the-top content.

Having been established about three decades before, Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms is renowned for producing enduringly famous soap operas like "Hum Paanch", "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii", "Kaahin Kissii Roz", "Kasautii Zindagii Kay" and "Bade Achhe Lagte Hain".

The subsequent founder of the banner's film division, Balaji Motion Pictures, is Kapoor, daughter of famous actor Jeetendra and producer Shobha Kapoor. She has also produced a number of films, including "Lootera", "Love Sex aur Dhokha", "Shootout at Lokhandwala", "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai", "Dirty Picture", and "Udta Punjab" among others.

"Every tale I shared served as a bridge to establish a connection with listeners on many levels. The surprising detours our trip made are evidence of the strength of the affection bestowed by the people of India and beyond. "My heart is overflowing with thankfulness and a deeper determination to use my work to positively influence audiences," she said.

The Directorate Award went given media magnate Subhash Chandra in 2011 instead of Kapoor.

The other two Indian musicians nominated for honors at the yearly international show were Shefali Shah and Jim Sarbh.

Shah was the Netflix series "Delhi Crime" second season's best actress nominee; however, Mexican actress Carla Souza of "La Caida (Dive)" fame defeated her.

The first-ever Indian win at the awards, the International Emmy for best drama series went to "Delhi Crime" for its inaugural season in 2020.

In the category for best performance by an actress, Connie Nielsen from the Danish series "Drommeren" and Billie Piper from the British drama "I Hate Suzie Too" were also contenders.

The "Rocket Boys" actor Sarbh was also unable to turn an actor nomination for his finest performance into a victory. Martin Freeman, a former "Sherlock" cast member who won for "The Responder," defeated him.

The other two candidates in the category, in addition to Sarbh and Freeman, were Gustavo Bassani of "Iosi, El Espia Arrepentido" (Argentina) and Jonas Karlsson of the Swedish series "Nattryttarna".
