In the Ranji Trophy, Bengal seems to be facing difficulties due to overhead circumstances. The first day's play versus Chhattisgarh at Eden Gardens finished 17 overs short owing to poor light, while the foggy weather on Day II prevented play from beginning.

But Bengal added 175 to their overnight 206/4 in the 55 overs of play on Saturday, reaching 381/8 at stumps thanks to keeper-batter Abishek Porel's first-class century.

"We'll try to get 400 in three or four overs if play starts on time tomorrow (Sunday) and then declare. However, we'll have to notify immediately if there is a delayed start once again, head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla said afterwards.

The 21-year-old Porel was undoubtedly Bengal's star of the day as he kept his cool and continued hitting despite his older partner Anustup Majumdar's (71), who did not stay long after play started on Saturday. It is important to give the young player credit for his ability to play the ball fairly, for not overplaying his aggressive batting style, and for not chasing the bouncer, which almost got him out on Day 1.

Laxmida advised me to keep the bouncer in place after giving me the pitch since it would help me reach a hundred. I practiced leaving the bouncer here early in the morning," Porel said.

Brief scores: Bengal 381/8 vs. Chhattisgarh (A. Majumdar 71, A. Porel 114). Day 2 at stumps.
