Cannes Film Festival Launches Immersive Competition Segment
A New Era of Storytelling at the 77th Edition
The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place in May, will feature a new competition section centered on immersive storytelling, the festival's organizers revealed on Wednesday.
Eight works that push the frontiers of traditional narrative through the use of virtual reality, augmented reality, and other cutting-edge technology will be on display as part of the Immersive Competition.
As the first immersive work presented in an official capacity at a major film festival, Alejandro González Iñárritu's groundbreaking virtual reality piece Carne y Arena (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible) marked a significant milestone when it debuted at the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. The Festival de Cannes has announced the launch of the Immersive Competition, carrying on this tradition.
Eight immersive works will be chosen by a committee made up of members from Cannes and industry professionals for the competition's first edition. A number of non-competitive pieces will also emphasize how cinema and immersive experiences go hand in hand.
From May 15 to 24, participants of the Marché du Film and the Festival de Cannes will have the opportunity to view the chosen works. They will be on display in a 1300m2 exhibition area at the Georges Méliès Campus, a center for film studies and creative writing, and the Cannes Cineum in Cannes La Bocca.
The competition entries will compete for the coveted Best Immersive Work award, which will be given out by a panel of prominent international jurors from the immersive art and film industries.
