Dalit Boy Tied Up and Beaten for Plucking Pomegranate in Telangana

Hyderabad, June 26, 2024: A 14-year-old Dalit boy was allegedly tied up and beaten by a man on the outskirts of Hyderabad for plucking a pomegranate from his house. The incident occurred in Kesaram village of Shabad mandal.

The victim, belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, had scaled the compound wall of a house to pluck pomegranates from a tree. However, the house owner, a retired government school headmaster named Madhusudan Reddy, caught the boy in the act. Reddy then tied the boy’s hands and legs with a rope and allegedly beat him.

The incident came to light after a picture showing the boy lying on the ground went viral. The victim’s mother lodged a complaint on June 24, leading to the registration of a case against Reddy under IPC sections 342 (wrongful confinement) and 324 (voluntary causing hurt). Additionally, relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were applied.

When the complainant visited the spot, the man and his son reportedly abused her. The police are currently conducting further investigation into the matter.

This incident highlights the need for awareness and action against discrimination and violence based on caste. Authorities must ensure that justice prevails and that such incidents are thoroughly investigated and addressed. ????????
