When their daughter Sajana told them about her debut for the Mumbai Indians in Friday's Women's Premier League (WPL) opener against the Delhi Capitals, Sajeevan and Sharada found it difficult to contain their emotions.

The whole neighborhood was treated to a remarkable sight when Sajana struck a game-winning six in the last over to lead the reigning champs to a dramatic four-wicket triumph.

Sajana's extraordinary feat in cricket, which catapulted her into fame suddenly, began in the modest surroundings of Mananthavady, a hamlet in the Keralan district of Wayanad.

When Sajana started showing some interest in cricket, Sajeevan, the local autorickshaw driver, and Sharada, the panchayat member and accountant, had additional everyday concerns, including debts, to deal with.

In actuality, they were unable to fund Sajana's desire to play cricket due to their low income.

According to Sajeevan, "Our income was not really that big enough to fund her sporting activities and travel for tournaments."

However, she had a lifelong love for cricket and would often play with her friends and family in the paddy field next to our house using coconut paddles.

She received an autographed bat from Gautam Gambhir when they met at the Krishnagiri stadium here one day. Upon realizing her enthusiasm for the game.

"Elsamma Baby's physical education teacher at the nearby government school also advised us to support her athletic goals," he claims.

The pivotal moment occurred when Sajana—who has a political science degree—was chosen to represent her area in the Under-19 competitions.

"I lacked the money to go. After I was chosen to play for my district, I began receiving a daily stipend of 150 rupees. That money meant a lot to me. After that, it increased to 150, 300, and 900," Sajana said in a video that was posted to the MI website.

However, that was just the beginning of her intoxicating journey. She was immediately selected for the state U-19 team and then named captain as well.

Sajana, who was 29 at the time, was chosen for India A in the next decade. When she bid at the first WPL auction in early January of last year, it was the first indication that she was becoming more well-known.

Although she didn't succeed, her persistence paid off in the latter part of the previous year when the Mumbai Indians acquired her for Rs 15 lakh at the auction room.

That marked the start of an adventure she would always treasure.
