In India's opening Twenty20 World Cup match against Ireland on Wednesday, Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma should start at the top of the lineup, with Yashasvi Jaiswal moving down to the No. 3 spot.

The order in which Kohli should bat during the T20 World Cup has been hotly contested.

India's designated No. 3 batter in the white-ball format is Kohli. But after his IPL triumph, there have been suggestions for him to open the batting.

On Star Sports, Gavaskar stated, "Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to open the batting along with Yashasvi Jaiswal at three."

In 15 IPL matches, Kohli, who opened for RCB, scored 741 runs at an average of 61.75 with a strike rate of over 154. During the prolific stretch, he hit five fifties and a century.

"Rishabh Pant at five, Suryakumar Yadav at four." I would start Hardik Pandya at number six, Ravindra Jadeja at number seven, and Shivam Dube at number eight—not necessarily in that batting order. After finishing his XI, Gavaskar stated, "No. 9 Kuldeep Yadav, No. 10 Jasprit Bumrah, and No. 11 will be Siraj."

India's next match is against Pakistan, their bitter rivals, on Sunday in New York following the Ireland match.
