Iga Swiatek Regains World No. 1 Ranking with Dominant Victory at WTA Finals

In the season-ending WTA Finals in Cancun on Monday, Iga Swiatek defeated American Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-0 to reclaim her world No. 1 position from Aryna Sabalenka.

In a match postponed by a day owing to weather, the Pole defeated Pegula five times and won the last eleven games in a 59-minute massacre to win her maiden WTA Finals championship.

During the victory ceremony, Swiatek remarked, "I want to thank my team who have been with me for the whole season."

"This is undoubtedly an up, and if we keep working like that, we'll have many more ups and downs."

She also expressed her gratitude to the attendees, who put up with many rain delays and strong winds throughout the celebration in the seaside resort town of Mexico.

Having won the China Open last month and without dropping a set in her five matches in the tournament that pits the top eight women in the world, Swiatek arrived here in high form.

After losing the top place to Sabalenka after the US Open in September, Swiatek finishes the season on an 11-match winning run and will finish the year in the top rank for the second consecutive year.

During this season, Swiatek, 22, won six of her 17 career championships. In June, she won her fourth grand slam championship by retaining the French Open title.

Pegula, 29, was kind in her loss despite struggling with her serve and not having the same amount of enthusiasm as Swiatek.
