Odisha Government to Landscape Shree Jagannath Temple Surroundings with Traditional Plants

The 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple's surroundings will be landscaped by the Odisha government using plants representative of the temple's tradition.

Around the shrine would be grown the plants specified in the many scriptures related to the Shree Jagannath tradition.

The concept calls for the development of a 14-meter landscaping area with a garden of significant plants and shrubs to the Jagannath culture. These are a part of the beautification project known as the Shree Jagannath Parikrama Prakalpa (Heritage Corridor Project), which is focused on the area 75 meters around the shrine. The project, with a $800 million budget, had begun in November 2021. The task of finishing the project has been given to the Tata Group.

V.K. Pandian, the chief minister's private secretary and secretary of the 5T (teamwork, technology, transparency, transformation, and time limit) initiative, evaluated the project on Friday morning during a visit to the Shree Jagannath Temple. The Tatas have been requested by the state government to hire more workers at night in order to finish the project on schedule.

It was resolved at the review meeting that sufficient parking arrangements for two-wheelers would be established for workers and commuters. The outer access road will receive extra care to prevent encroachments.Taking into consideration the viewpoints of many stakeholders as well as the history and tradition of these mathas, it was agreed to speed the redevelopment of mathas (mutts). Strong opposition has been raised to tearing down the mathas to improve the area around the shrine built in the 12th century. The state government had promised at the time that the redevelopment of mutts would be carried out with consideration for the feelings of the populace.

"The best experience for the numerous worshippers who visit the temple every day will be given top priority, along with the prompt and efficient completion of the work. Along with reviewing parking options and the supply of essential amenities for pilgrims, work progress at the Jagannath Ballav Parking Center and Shree Setu (the first trumpet bridge connecting Puri's outskirts directly to the area around the temple) were also assessed, according to officials.

The company building the Shree Setu work and Jagannath Ballav Pilgrim Center was given instructions to finish the project by the deadline so that the pilgrims visiting Puri in the future year will have a better experience.
