Patna High Court Strikes Down Bihar's Increased Reservation Quotas

On Thursday, the Patna High Court invalidated the rise in reservations implemented in Bihar the previous year, which saw quotas for Dalits, tribal people, and members of backward classes move from 50% to 65% in government employment and educational establishments.

A Division Bench led by Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran rendered a decision on many petitions that had challenged the laws introduced by the Nitish Kumar administration in November 2023.

"We had submitted that the amendments to the reservation laws were violative of the Constitution," Ritika Rani, one of the petitioners' attorneys, stated.

"The court had set aside its decision for March after hearing arguments from both sides. Our requests have been granted as of today, according to the final order," she informed PTI-Bhasha.

On November 21st of last year, the Nitish Kumar government published gazette notifications increasing the percentage of underprivileged castes in state government positions and educational institutions from 50% to 65%.
