34 residents of the Kallakurichi district have passed away as a result of consuming "methanol mixed arrack," Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced on Thursday.

Stalin further ordered officials to inform a one-man panel headed by former Madras High Court Judge B Gokuldas, who would investigate the causes of the Kallakurichi killings and recommend to the government what steps should be taken to stop similar tragedies from happening again.

The chief minister declared that each of the families of the 34 people who died after drinking illicit arrack would receive Rs 10 lakh in assistance, and stated that four people connected to the selling of hazardous arrack have been detained thus far.

He also declared that everyone receiving hospital treatment will receive Rs 50,000 in support. The chief minister added that after an inspection, the state's director general of police and home secretary will present a report on the hooch disaster.
