The 1991 manifesto, which promised liberalization, was one of the many legacies left by the brief but "hugely impactful" political career of the former prime minister, according to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday.

Ramesh recalled Rajiv Gandhi's accomplishments on the occasion of his passing.

"Despite being brief, his political career had a significant impact. We now take for granted the many legacies he left behind," he remarked.

The 18-year-old voting age, the constitutional empowerment of panchayats and nagarpalikas, which includes providing reservations for women in elections, peace in Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, and Punjab, India's emergence as a major player in the IT, computer, and telecom industries, the application of science and technology to societal issues and challenges, and the bolstering of India's space and nuclear programs are a few of these. and a lot more," he remarked.

However, Ramesh pointed out that one legacy that is sometimes disregarded is the Congress's 1991 manifesto, which he personally spent 10 days working on and released on April 15, 1991.

The importance of the story was only conveyed by The Telegraph, which published a headline about it the following day. The Congress released a snapshot of the newspaper headline that reads, "Congress promises liberalization drive," along with a picture of Rajiv Gandhi releasing the manifesto. "The headline proved to be prophetic," the Congress said.

"On July 23, 1991, at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, Dr Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister quoted extensively from this manifesto - the last political will and testament of Rajiv Gandhi as it were -to justify the dramatic changes that the Narasimha Rao government was bringing about in economic policy," Ramesh stated.

Gandhi served as prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989. During an electoral campaign in 1991, LTTE terrorists killed Gandhi at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Press Time staff and has been published from a syndicated feed.
