India's captain Suryakumar Yadav celebrates his half century during the first T20 International cricket match of a T20I series between India and Australia, at the Dr. Y. S. Rajashekar Reddy ACA–VDCA International Cricket Stadium

It will take Suryakumar Yadav some time to process the overwhelming sense of being the captain of India, but he believes in leaving the leadership baggage in the dressing room when he is out with the willow.

In the first T20 International here on Thursday, Surya made his senior India captaincy debut by defeating Australia by two wickets. He also set the tone for the 209-run chase with an incredible 80 off 42 balls.

"Whenever you play cricket, you think of representing India, it will take some time to sink in but very proud," Surya remarked during the presentation ceremony following the match. "I think it's a proud moment," he said.

"I left the luggage belonging to the captain in the changing room. When asked how to separate leadership and batting, Surya replied, "I just tried to enjoy my batting, whether I am batting 10 or 40 balls."

Rinku Singh, who was only six T20Is "old," ended the match just as it was beginning to go out of control with a 22-run haul off just 14 balls.

It was amazing to witness the youngsters maintain their composure. It was a circumstance that was built just for Rinku. I felt more at ease with him too," Surya remarked.

He also could not overlook the fact that Mukesh Kumar, the Bengal speedster, frequently hit the yorker in the last over of the Australian innings, which cost just five runs.

Regarding Mukesh, the skipper remarked, "It was huge."

"After 16 overs, the three fast bowlers helped us get back into the game. Amazing accomplishment." Surya admitted that although chasing could have been difficult in the absence of dew, it wasn't.

"I had anticipated seeing some dew, but none was present. It's a little field, and I anticipated that batting would get easier. Thought they might score between 230 and 235, but the bowlers performed incredibly well," the captain appeared happy.

He and Ishan Kishan teamed up at 22 for two, and both had experienced similar circumstances for the Mumbai Indians on multiple occasions.

"All we wanted to do was stay upbeat. Let's have fun and express ourselves. One thing I told Kishan was to just keep batting and not to focus on the objective. After ten overs, the circumstances were ideal. Every other day in the IPL, there is a 100 off 60 ball match," he stated.
