Large portions of the country sizzled under the sweltering sun on Sunday, and the Meteorological Department warned in its five-day prediction that heatwave conditions will persist across many sections of Gangetic West Bengal, with severe heatwaves in isolated pockets.

Sunday saw temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of south Bengal, with Panagarh in the Paschim Bardhaman district recording the state's highest temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, 8.3 degrees above average, the report added.

The meteorological service predicted heatwave temperatures until April 25 for several areas of Gangetic West Bengal, with isolated pockets experiencing extreme heatwave conditions.

It stated that on Sunday, there were heatwave to extremely hot temperatures in a few locations in the districts of Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Hooghly, Paschim Bardhaman, and North 24 Parganas.

According to the Meteorological Department, there were one or two areas in Kolkata, Howrah, Nadia, Birbhum, South 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, and Purulia district where heatwave conditions were present.

The greatest temperature of the day, 40.3 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Kolkata and Salt Lake, a nearby satellite city, it continued.
