According to the event's official X website, French director Quentin Dupieux's most recent four-part comedy, The Second Act, starring Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, and Raphaël Quenard, is scheduled to begin the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 14.

The statement, which was tweeted with a still from the movie, said, "#LeDeuxièmeActe, new comedy by Quentin Dupieux will open #Cannes2024 in world premiere on May 14."

The Second Act, which is being produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi and is being marketed internationally by Kinology, will also open in French theaters on May 14.

"Florence wishes to present her father to David, the man she is deeply in love with." However, David wants to fling her into the arms of his friend Willy because he isn't attracted to her. The movie is described as "a new mise en abyme around acting" in IMDb's official summary, which states that the characters meet in a diner in the middle of nowhere.

In addition to his avant-garde style of filmmaking and surreal humor, Dupieux is well-known for his works Mandibles and Smoking Causes Coughing. After Mandibles, Smoking Causes Coughing, and Yannick, Quenard and the French director have worked together four times already on The Second Act.

The Second Act, supported by Chi-Fou-Mi Productions and distributed by Diaphana Distribution, is the follow-up to Smoking Causes Coughing, which was exhibited in the Official Selection round's Out of Competition category in 2022.

On May 14, live coverage of the film festival's opening ceremony will air on French television. There will be a master of ceremonies, Camille Cottin.

In addition to The Second Act, the festival will feature world premieres of movies like Anya Taylor-Joy's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Emma Stone's Kinds of Kindness, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and featured in Poor Things, is anticipated to be screened at the occasion as well. On April 11, Cannes Film Festival head Thierry Fremaux will reveal the whole list of titles.
