Trinamul Trade Union Launches Chai Shramik Ekta Yatra in Dooars Tea Estates
State INTTUC president Ritabrata Banerjee (centre) shares the route map and other details of Chai Shramik Ekta Yatra, with other trade union leaders, at the state guest house in Siliguri on Sunday

Trinamul trade union officials and party members have set a goal to visit with workers working in more than 130 tea farms across the Dooars area in the next 11 days.

The Chai Shramik Ekta Yatra, organized by the Trinamul Cha Bagan Shramik Union (TCBSU), will begin on Monday and go through the districts of Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri before arriving in western Dooars on February 29. The march will begin near the border between Bengal and Assam in eastern Dooars.

"Our trade union leaders oversee the Dooars' tea farms. According to Ritabrata Banerjee, the state president of IINTTUC, Trinamul's trade union front, the leaders will inform workers and their families of the benefits provided by the Bengal government while also reminding them of the phony promises made by BJP leaders, including central ministers. This was stated here on Sunday.

The march will pass through many tea farms each day. Additionally, employees from two to three gardens will be present at general meetings. There will be a total of fifteen of these gatherings across the tea belt. We are going to host a public gathering in Banarhat on March 1st,” he continued.

Every day, the march will pass past eight to ten tea estates. The yatra will pass through 15 to 20 gardens on certain days. The goal is to engage as many tea workers as possible, according to Nirjal Dey, the head of the INTTUC district for the Darjeeling (plains) area.

Following their loss of three Lok Sabha seats in the Brew belt during the 2019 elections, Trinamul was dealt another blow in the 2021 Assembly elections. Despite the party's impressive victory in the state, it was only able to secure two of the 14 Assembly seats in the tea belt.

In order to repair the harm, Trinamul has refocused on the tea belt throughout the last several years. Among other things, this has included raising the daily salary and granting land rights to tea workers. Trinamul won the Dhupguri Assembly by-election after doing better in the rural votes.

The BJP seems unfazed. Shankar Ghosh, the BJP MLA for Siliguri, said, "Tea workers know they are getting benefits of central schemes which the state runs in its name and that the state has failed to fix the minimum wage rate so far."
