Avian Flu Outbreak Confirmed at Manarcad Poultry Farm in Kerala

pThe district administration in Kerala has confirmed an outbreak of avian flu (H5N1) at the government-run regional poultry farm in Manarcad. The situation has prompted immediate measures to contain the spread and protect public health.

Euthanization and Cremation

In response to the outbreak, authorities have made the difficult decision to euthanize and cremate all domesticated and pet birds within a one-kilometer radius of the affected poultry farm. This step aims to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Surveillance Zone and Disinfection

The district administration has declared a surveillance zone extending from 1 to 10 kilometers around the poultry farm. Within this area, strict disinfection protocols will be implemented to curb the spread of the disease.

Ban on Poultry Products

To prevent the potential spread of avian flu, a ban has been imposed on the sale and import of poultry products—including chicken, duck, quails, and other birds—in Kottayam district.

Inter-Departmental Response

An inter-departmental meeting convened at the Collectorate addressed the situation promptly. District Collector V Vigneshwari confirmed the avian flu outbreak at the poultry farm, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Animal Husbandry department.

Impact on Poultry Farm

The affected poultry farm in Manarcad had approximately nine thousand chickens. The outbreak was confirmed by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases lab in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, after testing samples from the chickens that had succumbed to the disease.
