Bruce Beresford's Cinematic Journey: Insights, Inspiration, and a Tribute to Satyajit Ray

Celebrated Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford had a fascinating conversation with director Srijit Mukherji on Thursday at the 29th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). Known for movies like Driving Miss Daisy and Double Jeopardy, Beresford gave insightful guidance for aspiring filmmakers while expressing his appreciation for Satyajit Ray's work and the growing popularity of Indian cinema in Australia.

Beresford remarked, "Satyajit Ray is probably one of the greatest directors ever, and all of his films are tremendously powerful," demonstrating the work's continued relevance to this day.

"Pather Panchali is a fantastic movie. Even though it was completed in the 1950s, it still has relevance in the modern era. Satyajit Ray was a unique filmmaker with a simple aesthetic. Additionally, Beresford noted, "He had a profound understanding of people, which is quite rare in films."

"I always tell my actors to listen when the other actor is speaking because the camera can photograph people while they are thinking," Beresford shared about his approach to working with actors. An exceptional actor such as Morgan Freeman is truly necessary to elevate listening to the level of speaking.

"When you perform, you should always feel as though this is your first time having this conversation. If it doesn't appear like it's the first time on camera, no matter how much practice and preparation you've done, it won't work, he continued.

Beresford noted the increasing popularity of Indian films in Australia but also mentioned that he has seen a trend of young Australian and Indian filmmakers "remake and remix films a lot." "It's really thrilling when a filmmaker, particularly a budding filmmaker, has something interesting to share and a unique perspective on the world," he continued.

Beresford concluded the meeting by sharing his personal filmmaking passion and his intention to keep telling cinematic stories. "Until my mobility is gone, I want to continue making films." I have so many lovely tales to share with others. I'll keep making movies as long as I have work," Beresford concluded.
