AMETHI — K L Sharma, a loyalist of the Congress party, filed his nomination from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat on Friday. Sharma submitted his papers at the collectorate, flanked by local Congress leaders.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged the public in Amethi to cast their votes for Sharma. Upon her arrival in the constituency, Priyanka made her way to the party office in Gauriganj to meet Sharma. She also addressed party workers, rallying them to ensure Sharma’s victory.
Following her engagement in Amethi, Priyanka left for Rae Bareli to accompany Rahul Gandhi. Rahul is set to file his nomination from the constituency, a seat previously held by his mother, Sonia Gandhi.
Sharma’s candidature from the Amethi seat was announced early Friday, coinciding with the last day for filing nominations. The polling is slated for the fifth phase on May 20.
In what promises to be a closely watched contest, Sharma is pitted against BJP leader and sitting MP Smriti Irani. The Amethi constituency is all set for an intense political battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
